Tetra Pak Kunshan Integrated Production Service Base Awarded Carbon Neutrality Certificate Tetra Pak China Releases Carbon Neutrality Action Report (2024)

2025-10-22

Kunshan, October 22, 2025) Tetra Pak, the world's leading provider of food processing and packaging solutions, announced that its integrated production service base in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province has obtained a carbon neutrality verification certificate issued by TÜV SÜD, a global authoritative certification body, becoming Tetra Pak China's leading "carbon neutral" production base, achieving the first milestone in Tetra Pak China's carbon neutrality action path. Qin Weixi, member of the Standing Committee of the Kunshan Municipal Party Committee and secretary of the Party Working Committee of Kunshan Development Zone, Zhao Shu, member of the Party Working Committee and deputy director of the Management Committee of Kunshan Development Zone, and Gao Feng, deputy director of the Kunshan Development and Reform Commission, attended the ceremony and witnessed this important moment with the employees of Tetra Pak Kunshan Base. Liu Meiju, executive chairman of China Dairy Industry Association, congratulated Tetra Pak through video. This month, Tetra Pak's Kunshan base was also selected into the "List of Enterprises with Outstanding Achievements in Zero-Carbon Factory Construction in Suzhou", once again confirming Tetra Pak's best practice in carbon neutrality.

On the same day, the Tetra Pak China Carbon Neutrality Action Report (2024) was officially released, which not only showcased the significant carbon reduction results of the company's own operations and many highlights of promoting the green transformation of the entire value chain, but also demonstrated that "green flows, carbon reduction in action" has been internalized as a common culture of enterprises and employees.

Scientific planning and full participation to achieve carbon neutrality milestones

The selection of Tetra Pak Kunshan base as Tetra Pak China's best carbon neutrality base is a strategic measure for Tetra Pak to promote carbon neutrality actions. The Kunshan base integrates multiple functions such as packaging material production, equipment design and production, product research and development, technological innovation, and technical training, with rich operation scenarios and complex energy consumption structure, making it the most representative of Tetra Pak's production bases in China. The Kunshan site is the first to achieve carbon neutrality, which not only lays a solid foundation for Tetra Pak to achieve its own operational carbon neutrality goal by 2030, but also verifies the effectiveness and reproducibility of various carbon reduction measures and management plans.

At the same time, Kunshan Base has accumulated successful experience in cross-departmental collaboration and systematic management in the process of carbon neutrality promotion, and integrated the concept of carbon reduction into daily operations, gradually forming a methodology covering technology application, management system and organizational culture. This experience system provides practical samples and method references for Tetra Pak to promote carbon neutrality at other production sites in China.

In the Kunshan base, various carbon reduction actions are effectively implemented. the electrification of natural gas boilers, traditional forklifts and kitchen stoves is progressing in an orderly manner; roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels, heat recovery pipelines, and more energy-efficient cooling towers operate efficiently; The dust collector and conveyor belt in the workshop have been optimized for energy conservation, and the warehouse lighting system has also been upgraded. These actions, combined with carbon sink replenishment, have finally achieved this important carbon reduction milestone.

Qin Weixi, member of the Standing Committee of the Kunshan Municipal Party Committee and secretary of the Party Working Committee of Kunshan Development Zone, said in his speech: "Tetra Pak is actively fulfilling its social responsibilities and taking the lead in the field of sustainable development. Today, our factory is also Tetra Pak's highest carbon neutral production base in China, setting a model for the development of 'green and low-carbon +' for the majority of enterprises. It is expected that Tetra Pak will continue to make greater contributions to the high-quality development of the development zone in the future. ”

Tetra Pak's certification as carbon neutral also provides a reference practice sample for the manufacturing industry, especially the food and beverage packaging industry. The base significantly reduces unit emissions while increasing production, proving that green carbon reduction and commercial benefits can go hand in hand. Through the systematic action of "comprehensive investigation, multiple measures, full participation, and empowerment of the whole chain", the experience of the Kunshan base provides a reference path for the industry from strategy to execution, setting a new benchmark for green manufacturing.

Liu Meiju, Executive Chairman of the China Dairy Industry Association, said: "The achievement of carbon neutrality at the base fully reflects Tetra Pak China's strong sense of responsibility and high sense of mission in realizing the industry's green and low-carbon actions, and also plays a very good role in setting an example for the industry. ”

Steadily reduce carbon emissions, and achieve remarkable results in reducing emissions in its own operations and value chain

According to the accounting data, Tetra Pak China is moving forward steadily on the road to carbon reduction. In 2024, direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) from the company's operations decreased by 7.8% compared to 2023, against the backdrop of increased packaging material production. Compared with the 2019 base year, the direct emission intensity of packaging material production has been reduced by about 20%. In accordance with Tetra Pak's RE100 commitment, 100% of the electricity used in Tetra Pak's operations in China has obtained a renewable electricity certificate.

Solid progress has also been made in the field of carbon reduction in the value chain. In 2024, Tetra Pak China counted approximately 1,003,030 tonnes of indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the upstream and downstream of the value chain. In the context of the growth of packaging material production, the emission of packaging raw materials decreased by 9% compared with the 2019 base year. Tetra Pak insists on reporting accounting results openly and transparently, aiming to build consensus with upstream and downstream partners based on scientific data to jointly promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the entire value chain.

Zhu Yidong, President of Tetra Pak Greater China, said: "The carbon neutrality of Tetra Pak Kunshan Integrated Production Service Base is an important milestone in our action path and a new starting point. In the future, Tetra Pak will continue to take a rigorous and pragmatic attitude to explore the carbon reduction potential of its own operations, actively advocate emission reduction across the value chain, and work with upstream and downstream partners to jointly contribute to the country's early realization of the strategic goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and also play a role in global climate change response. ”
